Excuse me for a moment, and let me rant for a few seconds about Katara’s characterization.
She’s a mom character, and therefore it’s very easy to perceive her as kind of uptight. But I don’t think that’s the case.
She can be serious. She can take the role of the “adult”. But I don’t think this is how she is by nature or this is how she wants to be.
Think about it for a moment. She’s basically been an adult since she was 8, and when you’re responsible for your tribe, when you’re taking on the responsibility of your parent, and when you’re dealing with a lot of grief by yourself, there just isn’t time for fun and games.Kanna: Alright, no more playing. Come on, Katara, you have chores.
This is all we know of Katara from before her mother was murdered. A totally carefree, cheerful child like everyone else. But them -BOOM- her childhood was taken away from her.
She had to adapt to this new life situation, and this life situation wasn’t one of fun. Therefore, this side of her had to go to the background.
But Katara can crack jokes in all sorts of situations,
(that they are usually kind of lame is another matter). She can laugh. She can goof off. She can have fun.
She likes having fun. She initiates fun, participates in fun, enjoys fun.
The first thing Aang suggested they did together was something as stupid, childish and frivolous as penguin sledding.
Guess what? She thought it was bloody awesome.
Like ‘I haven’t had this much fun since I was a kid-
- level of fun’.
It’s fantastic for her to have a friend like Aang, who is naturally cheerful and playful, because it influences her. But I don’t think he makes her less uptight, he just brings out a side of her that was already there. And being with someone who balances you, isn’t about them changing you, it’s about them bringing out something of yourself that you want, but can’t bring forward on your own.
Katara is already naturally carefree and humorously inclined, instinctively seeking fun. She just needs someone to remind her from time to time.
Aang braiding kataras hair, i felt like it was something that would happen and i had to draw it :D
I like to think Aang played with both of his girls’ hair. He wasn’t ashamed of it either. Whenever he brought officials over to the island, Kya would sometimes run in with her brush in hand and ask him to braid her hair. Aang would sit her on his lap and toy with her hair as he was discussing world affairs. Then he would braid Katara’s hair for her every morning before he left their room to meditate. Anything to spend time with his girls.
#this gives me so many feels #I mean just think about it #Katara and Sokka have been living the lives of adults since their mother died and their father left #Sokka’s primary concern has been being a real man and building up an army for so long #and Katara has been trying to care for her tribe and her family and maintain hope #they haven’t thought about just having fun for fun’s sake in so long #and then this kid comes along #and he completely changes the entire game #he’s Katara’s hope #the only chance Sokka has to finally kick fire bender ass #they’re ready to go fight a war #to keep living as adults #as they have for so longa #and this kid #this intensely powerful kid #stops and tells them that they have more serious business to attend to#AND IT’S JUST SILLY STUFF #IT’S JUST FUN #WHICH THEY WROTE OFF LONG AGO #it’s like when Katara said that she hadn’t gone penguin sledding since she was a kid and Aang told her that she still was a kid #he’s reminding them that they’re children #that they can have fun #he didn’t just give them hope for a world without war #he gave them fun in a world WITH one
So.. this shoulk work now. It’s just a small bunch of old scribbles I found on my hard drive and slapped together in a quasi-animatic rather than comic.
let me know if this is too awful to read and follow. I never did this before
The Koala-otter already showed up in this fanart, but it’s random
OMG THE SECOND POUTY FACE!
